Kumite

Kumite (sparring) is the first thing
that comes to most people's mind when
they think of karate training. It is the
closest simulation to actual combat
because a practitioner does not know
when or how an opponent will attack or
present an opening for a counter. While
we do not practice sports style point
sparring, where the match is stopped
every time a “point” is scored, we do
practice kumite in continuous three to
five minute matches. In this way the
flow of the match is preserved, and
combinations and counterattacks can be
performed more naturally. Students are
encouraged to keep techniques strong and
focused, but safety is always the top
priority. Although it may look very
dangerous and violent to people
unfamiliar with karate, students are
always required to be aware of the
safety of themselves and their partners,
and treat each other with the respect
due to someone that is helping them
refine their own technique. Bumps and
bruises are very common, but serious
injuries during sparring matches are
actually quite rare.
